General Description
Chamomile is a small, aromatic flowering herb with delicate, daisy-like flowers and finely divided leaves. Both Roman and German chamomile belong to the Asteraceae family, yet they differ slightly in growth and chemical composition.
Roman chamomile is a low-growing perennial, often used as a ground cover, while German chamomile is an annual plant that can grow taller and produces more abundant flowers. German chamomile essential oil is known for its deep blue colour, due to the presence of chamazulene formed during distillation.
Chamomile has long been valued for its gentle yet powerful therapeutic qualities, particularly in calming the mind and soothing the body.
History / Folk Lore
Chamomile has been used for thousands of years in traditional medicine. The ancient Egyptians dedicated chamomile to the sun and used it in remedies for fever and skin conditions.
In Europe, chamomile was known as a โplant physician,โ believed to support the health of nearby plants. It was widely used in herbal medicine for digestive complaints, nervous conditions, and womenโs health.
The name Matricaria is derived from the Latin matrix, meaning โwomb,โ highlighting its traditional use in supporting menstrual and reproductive health. Chamomile was also commonly used in teas, baths, and compresses for its calming and restorative properties.
