General Description
Vetiver is a tall, perennial grass native to India and widely cultivated in tropical regions such as Haiti, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka. Unlike most aromatic plants, the essential oil is extracted from the extensive root system rather than the leaves or flowers.
The roots grow deep into the soil, giving the plant its well-known stabilising and grounding qualities. The oil itself is thick and viscous, with a rich, long-lasting aroma that improves with age. Vetiver is highly valued in perfumery as a base note and fixative, as well as in aromatherapy for its deeply calming properties.
History / Folk Lore
Vetiver has been used for centuries in traditional Indian medicine (Ayurveda), where it is known as โthe oil of tranquillity.โ The roots were traditionally woven into mats, fans, and screens, which were dampened with water to cool and fragrance the air in homes during hot weather.
In many cultures, vetiver has been associated with protection and grounding. It has been used in rituals and spiritual practices to promote stability, clarity, and connection to the earth.
Due to its cooling and calming nature, vetiver has also been used traditionally to soothe inflammation, reduce fever, and support overall wellbeing.
