General Description
Lime essential oil is derived from the peel of the lime fruit, a small citrus tree native to Southeast Asia and now widely cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions. The fruit is known for its vibrant green colour and intensely fresh aroma.
The oil can be produced through cold pressing, which retains the bright, tangy scent of the fresh peel, or through steam distillation, resulting in a softer, slightly sweeter and less sharp aroma. Lime essential oil is widely used in aromatherapy, perfumery, and natural cleaning products for its refreshing and purifying qualities.
History / Folk Lore
Limes have a long history of use in traditional medicine and seafaring culture. Sailors in the British Navy were historically given limes to prevent scurvy due to their high vitamin C content, earning them the nickname โlimeys.โ
In traditional herbal practices, lime and other citrus fruits were valued for their cleansing, digestive, and immune-supporting properties. The bright, uplifting scent of lime has long been associated with freshness, vitality, and renewal.
In modern aromatherapy, lime essential oil is appreciated for its energising and clarifying effects on both the body and mind.
