General Description
Valerian essential oil is derived from the roots of Valeriana officinalis, a perennial flowering plant native to Europe and parts of Asia. The plant produces clusters of delicate pink or white flowers, but it is the roots that contain the powerful aromatic compounds used for essential oil production.
The oil has a very distinctive, heavy aroma that is often described as earthy and musky. While the scent may not appeal to everyone, valerian is highly valued in aromatherapy for its deeply calming and sedative effects on the nervous system.
History / Folk Lore
Valerian has been used for centuries as a natural remedy for sleep and nervous conditions. In ancient Greece and Rome, it was prescribed for insomnia, anxiety, and digestive issues.
During the Middle Ages, valerian was used to calm the nervous system and was often carried as a protective herb. It was also used during times of stress and unrest for its grounding and stabilising effects.
In traditional European herbal medicine, valerian became one of the most well-known remedies for sleep disorders and nervous tension, a reputation it still holds today.
Main Uses In Massage
Valerian essential oil is used in massage blends for its deeply relaxing and sedative properties. It may help calm the nervous system, ease tension, and promote restful sleep.
It is particularly beneficial in blends for insomnia, stress, and anxiety, as well as for easing muscular tension linked to nervous strain. Due to its strong aroma, it is often blended with other oils to soften its scent.
