August Full Moon

The August Full Moon is traditionally known as the Sturgeon Moon, a name originating from North American seasonal traditions, when sturgeon were historically abundant in the Great Lakes and surrounding waterways.

Here in Australia, August falls during our winter season, giving this Full Moon a distinctly different seasonal setting in the Southern Hemisphere. While the traditional name Sturgeon Moon is still widely used around the world, we experience this lunar cycle during a time of winter reflection, stillness and preparation for the return of spring.

This particular Full Moon is especially significant in 2026 as it coincides with a deep partial lunar eclipse on 27–28 August. During the eclipse, approximately 96% of the Moon will pass through Earth’s darkest shadow, the umbra, creating the potential for a striking reddish or copper glow and giving rise to the evocative term “Blood Moon.”

The partial lunar eclipse itself will be visible from parts of the Americas, Europe and Africa, rather than from most of Australia. From mainland Australia, the Moon will be below the horizon during the main stages of the eclipse, meaning we will experience the Full Moon without witnessing the partial eclipse itself.
