General Description
Palmarosa is a tall, aromatic perennial grass that can grow up to 2โ3 metres in height. It produces slender green leaves and delicate flowering tops from which the essential oil is extracted. Native to India and other parts of Southeast Asia, it is closely related to citronella and lemongrass but is distinguished by its notably floral, rose-like scent due to its high geraniol content.
The name โpalmarosaโ is believed to refer to its rose-like fragrance (โpalmโ referring to the grassy palm-like leaves and โrosaโ meaning rose). Despite being a grass, its aromatic profile places it firmly within the floral category of essential oils.
History / Folk Lore
Palmarosa has long been used in traditional Ayurvedic practices in India, where it was valued for its ability to support skin health, balance emotional states, and assist in recovery from minor infections and skin conditions. It was commonly used in herbal bathing preparations and skin applications due to its purifying and restorative qualities.
Historically, it was also used as a natural fragrance ingredient and as a means of protecting stored textiles and grains due to its insect-repelling properties. Its cultivation expanded beyond India as its popularity grew in natural perfumery and aromatherapy for its rose-like aromatic profile at a more accessible cost than true rose oil.
Main Uses In Massage

When diluted appropriately, it can be applied in massage oils to support emotional calm while also nourishing the skin.
